Maximize your day trip to Manuel Antonio National Park with our expert tips for wildlife spotting and beach relaxation.
Just a 45-minute drive south of Jaco lies Manuel Antonio National Park. Despite being one of the smallest national parks in Costa Rica, it is consistently ranked as one of the most beautiful parks in the world.
### The Wildlife Experience
Manuel Antonio is unique because the dense rainforest spills directly onto pristine white-sand beaches. The biodiversity here is staggering. It is one of the few places where you can easily spot three species of monkeys in a single day: Howler monkeys, White-Faced Capuchins, and the endangered Squirrel monkey.
Keep your eyes peeled for both two-toed and three-toed sloths resting in the Cecropia trees. You will also encounter iguanas, agoutis, and vibrant toucans. **Pro Tip:** Always hire a certified naturalist guide. Their high-powered spotting scopes will show you camouflaged wildlife you would definitely miss on your own.
### The Beaches
After your hike, the trails lead you straight to Playa Manuel Antonio and Playa Espadilla Sur. These protected coves offer calm, warm waters perfect for swimming. The contrast of the emerald green jungle against the turquoise water is breathtaking.
### Important Rules
The park is highly protected. Single-use plastics are strictly banned. You cannot bring in junk food, chips, or sandwiches, as the monkeys have become aggressive in trying to steal human food. Bring water in a reusable bottle and leave the snacks in the van!
