Half Day vs Full Day Fishing Charter in Jaco

If you are choosing between a half day and full day fishing charter in Jaco, here is the simple version: the half day is better for families, shorter schedules, and close-range action. The full day is better if you want the best shot at offshore species.

Our standard half day is 5 hours and starts at $800. It usually departs from Herradura Beach and does not include lunch. Our standard full day is 8 hours and starts at $1,000, with lunch included on board.

That means the difference is $200. For that $200, you are buying 3 more hours on the water and lunch. More importantly, you are buying more range, more time to search, and more chances to adjust if the first spot is not working.

What a half day really means

A half day in Jaco is a 5-hour private fishing trip. For many groups, that is enough. If you have kids, older family members, people who get tired in the sun, or a schedule packed with tours, a half day makes sense.

A half day is also good if your target is closer to shore. Around Herradura, we can work inshore areas, rocky points, bait zones, and nearshore water where roosterfish, snapper, and sometimes mahi mahi can be possible depending on the season.

Some guests hear “half day” and think it is a small trip. It is not. Five hours on the water in Costa Rica sun is a real trip. If you are not used to fishing offshore, five hours can feel like plenty.

What a full day gives you

A full day gives you 8 hours. That changes everything. With 8 hours, the captain can run farther, search more water, follow bird activity, work current lines, and stay longer when the bite starts late.

Offshore fishing is not always waiting 5 miles from shore. Some of the better sailfish, tuna, mahi, and marlin water may take time to reach. The full day also includes lunch, which matters more than people think. When you are fishing hard and the sun is high, having lunch on board keeps the day comfortable.

The full day is not just longer. It gives the boat more freedom. If the morning starts slow, we still have time. If the birds show farther out, we can chase them. If the mahi bite is not where it was yesterday, we can keep looking.

The $200 difference

A lot of guests ask if the full day is worth the extra $200. My honest answer: if you care about catching offshore species, yes.

You are paying $200 more for 3 extra hours, lunch, and a much better fishing window. Three hours is a lot of fishing time. It can be the whole difference between getting one bite and getting a real day.

I have seen days where the half day boats came back right before the tuna started showing. I have seen days where the morning was slow, then the bite turned on late. I have also seen half day trips crush it early and make the full day look unnecessary. That is fishing. But if we are talking probabilities, the full day gives you better odds.

If you want sailfish or marlin

If your target is sailfish or marlin, book the full day. Can a sailfish be caught on a half day? Yes. Has it happened? Of course. But if you are coming to Costa Rica and telling me sailfish or marlin is the dream, I am not going to recommend a short trip as your best plan.

Sailfish and marlin are usually farther offshore. They depend on water color, bait, current, temperature, and time. You may need to troll longer. You may need to run past water that looks okay to reach water that looks right.

Marlin especially is not something I would chase on a half day unless conditions were very specific and close. If someone tells you marlin is easy on a half day, be careful. That is not how I would sell it.

If you want mahi mahi

Mahi mahi depends on the season and where the fish are. During strong dorado months, a half day can be enough if the fish are close. In April, for example, mahi can be active enough that shorter trips still have a good chance when the water is right.

But when mahi are scattered, like they can be in transition months, a full day is much better. Mahi often hold around floating debris, current lines, birds, or bait. Finding that takes time.

If you want roosterfish

For roosterfish, half day can be a great choice. Roosterfish are an inshore target. Around Jaco and Herradura, we can fish rocky points, beaches, current edges, and nearshore structure without needing a long offshore run.

The best roosterfish window is often early, before the sun gets too high and before boat traffic builds. That makes half day a smart roosterfish option, especially from Herradura Beach.

Families with kids

For families with young kids, I usually recommend half day. Five hours is enough adventure. The kids get the boat ride, the fishing, the photos, maybe some action, and then everyone is back before the day gets too hot.

If the kids are older, love fishing, and can handle sun and time on the water, full day can be great. But for most family vacation groups, half day is the safer choice.

If it is your only fishing day in Costa Rica, do the full day. That is my honest answer. You flew all the way here. You are already paying for a private charter. The extra $200 buys you 3 more hours, lunch, better range, and more chances.

But if your goal is a fun family morning or a quick private fishing experience, half day is a good trip. I am not against half day. I just want guests to understand what they are choosing.

The full day is not magic either. You can still have a slow day on an 8-hour trip. But if the first area is dead, the captain has room to move. If birds show farther out, we can follow. If the mahi are scattered, we can keep looking. That flexibility is what you are paying for.
