Jaco and the nearby Los Sueños Marina are recognized globally as the sport fishing capital of Central America. Whether you are an experienced angler chasing a grand slam or a family looking for a fun day on the water, the Central Pacific coast has it all.
Offshore vs. Inshore
Offshore fishing (deep sea) typically takes you 20-40 miles out. Here, the targets are pelagic monsters: Blue Marlin, Black Marlin, Striped Marlin, Sailfish, Yellowfin Tuna, and Mahi-Mahi (Dorado). Full-day charters are required for offshore trips to allow enough travel time.
Inshore fishing keeps you closer to the dramatic, rocky coastline. It is fantastic for Roosterfish, Snapper (Cubera), Jack Crevalle, and Spanish Mackerel. Half-day trips are perfect for this, making it an excellent option for families and beginners.
Best Seasons
While you can catch fish year-round in Costa Rica, certain seasons peak for specific species. Sailfish are incredibly abundant from December through April. Marlin tend to peak in the 'green season' between September and November. Tuna and Mahi-Mahi are caught consistently throughout the year, especially when you find floating debris or spinner dolphins.
