Jaco Fishing Report: September 1–15, 2026

September started with good mahi mahi fishing offshore and very good roosterfish and red snapper fishing inshore. Catches around Jaco, Costa Rica, from September 1 through 15 included at least 83 fish. September 7 was a very good mahi mahi day, and we continued catching snapper on several dates through the first half of the month.

Mahi mahi: 15 fish on September 7

We caught 27 mahi mahi during the period. September 7 brought 15 between five boats, with individual catches of one, two, three, four and five fish. That day accounted for more than half of the mahi mahi caught in the first half of September.

There were also two on September 2, five on September 4, two on September 12 and three on September 14. Mahi mahi fishing gave us several good offshore days, with September 7 producing the largest number.

Red snapper fishing stayed very good

Catches included at least 21 red snapper. September 2 brought five, followed by three on September 9, five on September 11, six on September 12 and two on September 14.

September 12 had the highest snapper count, with six caught between two boats. The good red snapper fishing continued beyond the beginning of the month, with catches during the second week as well.

Roosterfish catches in early September

We caught seven roosterfish. Five came on September 2 between two boats: three on one and two on the other. There was another roosterfish on September 9 and one on September 12.

Roosterfish fishing in Jaco remained very good. Roosterfish and red snapper were the main inshore catches during these dates, with six jacks and five needlefish also caught in the period.

Yellowfin tuna, wahoo, sailfish and blue marlin

Offshore catches also included eight yellowfin tuna. We caught two on September 2, one on September 4, three on September 7, one on September 12 and one on September 14. The tuna were fewer than the mahi mahi during these dates. Four wahoo were caught: one each on September 2 and 4, and two on September 12.

We had four sailfish, with two on September 4 and two on September 9. Marlin continued to be slower, although we caught one blue marlin on September 4. The sailfish remained active while mahi mahi made up the larger share of the offshore catches.

Early September weather in Jaco

Mornings were sunny, followed by rain in the afternoons and at night. This was the normal weather for this part of the rainy season on Costa Rica’s Central Pacific coast.
