Jaco Fishing Report: August 1–15, 2026 | Roosterfish, Snapper & Tuna

Our Jaco fishing report for August 1–15, 2026 brought one of the most encouraging patterns of the month so far. Overall fishing conditions were very good, and the biggest story was the inshore fishing around Jaco and Herradura, where our boats found a strong number of roosterfish, red snapper and other quality coastal catches. Offshore, yellowfin tuna delivered several excellent days, while sailfish, marlin and mahi mahi / dorado remained below the stronger levels we sometimes see in Costa Rica.

Excellent inshore fishing in Jaco: roosterfish and snapper led the report

The strongest and most consistent part of the first half of August was inshore fishing from Jaco. Roosterfish were especially encouraging, with a good number of fish caught during the period. For anglers visiting Costa Rica specifically to target roosterfish, this was the type of report we want to see: multiple opportunities, quality fish and productive coastal fishing close to Jaco and Herradura.

Snapper fishing was also very good. Our catches included red snapper and mixed reef fish, giving guests a strong second option when the captain wanted to work structure, reefs and productive inshore areas. The combination of roosterfish and snapper made inshore trips a practical choice for families, first-time anglers and experienced fishermen who wanted action without committing the entire day to a long offshore run.

More than 90 fish caught across the fleet in 15 days

Across all fishing categories, our boats combined for more than 90 fish caught from August 1 through August 15. That total included inshore and offshore species and gives a useful picture of the overall productivity of the fleet during this period. It is important to remember that fishing changes every day, so a strong two-week total never guarantees the result of a future charter. What it does show is that our crews were consistently finding ways to create opportunities across different styles of fishing.

Some days were faster than others. When one area slowed down, our captains adjusted the plan, changed locations, worked different depths, followed current activity and used their local knowledge to search for the best available bite. That flexibility is a major part of successful Jaco fishing charters, especially in a fishery where conditions and species movement can change quickly.

Yellowfin tuna fishing produced several very good offshore days

Offshore, yellowfin tuna fishing from Jaco was the brightest part of the report. We had multiple very productive tuna days, and on the majority of offshore days our boats ran during this period, they finished with at least three tuna per boat. For guests looking for powerful fish, hard fights and productive blue-water action, tuna clearly offered the best offshore story of the first half of August.

Yellowfin tuna are constantly moving, so finding them still depends on the captain reading the water and reacting to signs such as feeding activity, birds, bait and other offshore clues. A full-day fishing charter normally gives the crew more range and time to search when tuna are the main goal.

Sailfish stayed present, but the bite was slow

Sailfish did not disappear completely, but the numbers stayed fairly low from August 1–15. We continued to see enough activity to keep sailfish in the offshore conversation, but this was not a period we would describe as a strong sailfish bite. Guests whose only goal is sailfish fishing in Costa Rica should always ask for the most current bite report before choosing a date and boat.

Marlin remained very low

Marlin activity was even lower. During this reporting period, marlin remained one of the least consistent major offshore targets. That does not mean a marlin cannot appear on any given day, but the recent numbers were not strong enough for us to present marlin as the most reliable target. Mahi mahi / dorado stayed a little low

Dorado, also known as mahi mahi, stayed somewhat below the level we would like to see. There were opportunities, but the bite was not as dependable as the yellowfin tuna action. This is another reason we do not recommend choosing a charter based only on a seasonal calendar. The best target can change from week to week, and the latest Jaco fishing reports should be used together with the Jaco fishing calendar.

Why captain experience matters on slower fishing days

One of the most important parts of this report is not only the total number of fish. It is the way our captains continued working when the bite slowed. Sportfishing is never identical from one day to the next. There are days when the fish are easy to locate, and there are days when the crew has to make more changes, cover more water and rethink the strategy.

The more than 90 fish caught during the first half of August reinforce the work of our boats and crews, but the bigger point is consistency of effort: even on slower days, our captains keep searching for the best option available so guests can return happy with the experience and, when the fishing allows it, with fish from a successful day on the water.
