Fishing license questions are boring until the morning of the trip. Then they become very important. If you are booking a fishing charter in Costa Rica, do not wait until you are standing at the boat to ask what paperwork is needed.

Sportfishing in Costa Rica is regulated, and license rules or costs can change. My advice is simple: ask us before the trip and we will tell you what applies to your charter at that time.

Do not rely on old screenshots

Guests sometimes send me old blog posts, old screenshots, or advice from a friend who fished years ago. That is not the way to handle licensing. Government requirements can change, and the process can also depend on the type of trip and boat.

Before your charter, send your date, number of anglers, and boat choice. We will help you confirm what is needed so there is no confusion on departure morning.

Why this matters

The morning of a fishing trip should be simple. The captain should be checking weather, bait, rods, ice, and the plan for the day. Guests should be arriving on time, putting sunscreen on, and getting ready to fish.

It should not turn into a paperwork discussion at 6:00am. That is why we try to answer license questions during booking, not at the dock.

What guests should bring

Bring basic identification and your payment method if you have a balance due. If anything else is required for your specific trip, we will tell you ahead of time.

You do not need to bring your own fishing gear. The boat has tackle, rods, bait setup, and what the captain wants for that day. License questions are separate from gear questions, and both are easier when we discuss them before the trip.

Standard and premium trips

Standard boats usually depart from Herradura Beach. Premium boats depart from Los Sueños Marina. License planning should be clear for both, but the logistics may feel different because the marina setup is more formal.

If you are booking a premium trip with several anglers, ask early. Bigger groups should not leave details to the last minute.

What I tell guests

I tell guests this: do not stress, but do ask. We deal with fishing trips every week. We can tell you what guests usually need and what to confirm before your date.

Fishing is already full of things we cannot control: wind, rain, water color, bait, birds, and fish mood. Paperwork is one thing we can handle early.

Avoid last-minute problems

The easiest way to avoid problems is to send one message when you book: “Do we need anything for licenses or paperwork?” That gives us time to answer clearly.

If you wait until the morning, we may still help, but it creates unnecessary stress. Good trips start calm. Good trips start organized.
