Where Do Jaco Fishing Charters Depart From?

This is one of the questions that can create confusion if nobody explains it clearly: not every Jaco fishing charter leaves from Los Sueños Marina. With Wahoo, the simple version is this: standard boats usually depart from Herradura Beach, and premium boats depart from Los Sueños Marina.

Both departure points are close to Jaco. Both can put you on fish. The difference is the type of boat, comfort level, marina setup, price, and what kind of experience you want.

Standard boats: Herradura Beach

Our standard private boats are the best value for most guests. These trips usually depart from Herradura Beach, just north of Jaco. Herradura is close, practical, and puts you right near productive inshore water without wasting the morning.

For half day trips, family groups, roosterfish, snapper, and shorter private charters, Herradura Beach makes a lot of sense. You can leave early, fish the morning window, and get back before the heat and afternoon weather build.

Some visitors hear “beach departure” and think it means low quality. That is not how it works here. A good captain, good timing, and good bait matter more than a fancy dock if your target is close or the bite is set up around Herradura.

Premium boats: Los Sueños Marina

Premium boats depart from Los Sueños Marina. These are the larger, more comfortable boats guests usually choose when they want a higher-end experience, more room, marina facilities, and stronger offshore focus.

If your group wants to target sailfish, marlin, tuna, or run farther offshore in comfort, Los Sueños is a strong option. It is also a good fit for guests who care about the marina experience: walking down the dock, boarding a larger boat, more shade, more cabin space, and a smoother setup for bigger groups.

Los Sueños is known for premium sportfishing, but premium also means higher price. That is why I do not push every guest there automatically. Some groups need it. Some groups do not.

Which one should you choose?

If you are booking a half day with kids, I usually lean Herradura Beach. If you are booking your only offshore day in Costa Rica and want the best comfort and range, I look harder at Los Sueños Marina.

If you are chasing roosterfish, snapper, or inshore action, Herradura can be perfect. If you are chasing sailfish or marlin, especially with a serious group, a full day premium option can be the better call.

The wrong way to choose is by the name alone. “Marina” sounds better to some guests, but it does not automatically mean better fishing for every trip. “Standard” sounds cheaper, but it does not mean bad. It means practical private fishing at a better value.

Transportation and timing

Most guests stay in Jaco, Herradura, Playa Hermosa, or Los Sueños. We help coordinate the plan so you know where to be and when. The important part is showing up on time. If the boat leaves at 6:00am, the captain is ready before that.

In this area, early departure matters. The water is calmer in the morning, the sun is lower, and the fish often feed better before the day gets heavy. Do not lose the best hour because the pickup plan was unclear.

My honest recommendation

If your budget matters and you want a strong private trip, start with the standard Herradura option. If you want more comfort, a bigger boat, premium service, and better offshore range, ask about Los Sueños Marina.

There is no one-size-fits-all answer. A honeymoon couple, a family with kids, a bachelor group, and two serious anglers should not all book the same boat.

What to ask before booking

Ask where the boat departs. Ask what is included. Ask if lunch is included. Ask whether your target species fits half day or full day. Ask if the current bite is close or farther offshore.

The better we understand your group, the better recommendation we can give. I would rather tell you the truth before you book than have you misunderstand the departure point or the boat level on the morning of the trip.
